Surfrider Foundation SD Chapter - 9th Annual Art Gala

The 9th Annual Art Gala benefiting the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is this Thursday May 21st.

As you have read in the past, Maku is a proud supporter or 1% For the Planet and part of our donation goes to the Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter.

This year we are also donating and Maku Lounge Chair and a Maku Side Table to the Art Gala at the Powerhouse in Del Mar. Check out the online Auction too for some really cool stuff!

Alt Build - Santa Monica

If you are in the Southern California area this weekend cruise on over to the Santa Monica Civic Center and check out Alt Build 2009.

We'll be there to support one of our partners in eco-motivation, Vernare both Friday and Saturday displaying some of the cool pieces in the 2009 collection such as the Maku Lounge Chair, Maku Dining Table, and Maku Chaise. You'll also be able to get a sneak peek at a few new pieces as part of a new collection we are working on!

Alt Build is the premier show for eco friendly building and state of the art design materials. It's free to attend and there are a lot of great speakers and seminars to attend.

The Gardens of Babylon and Urban Patio in Nashville

One of our best specialty retailers Deb from Urban Patio in Nashville Tennessee sent over these shots from the Nashville Home and Garden show last weekend. Urban Patio partnered with The Gardens of Babylon (also from Nashville) to create this amazing display of vertical gardening and featured the Maku Furniture lounge chair and Maku side table. Combined they won the American Horticulture Society Environmental Award for the show!

Maku Furniture featured on The Alternative Consumer

One of our favorite sites The Alternative Consumer featured a few Maku Furniture pieces on their site over the weekend. The Maku Sectional, Maku Lounge Chair, and Maku Coffee table were all pictured in a great little blurb about how we use 100% reclaimed wood in our furniture.

Reclaimed Wood production...

As you know at Maku Furniture we use only 100% reclaimed woods throughout our entire collection. Here are a couple of pics of the raw reclaimed wood before and during processing. It's hard to imagine that this these old beams will turn into beautiful outdoor furniture!

By the way, we have put a full analysis on the benefits of using reclaimed woods and as soon as we put a few finishing touches to it we'll post it up for all to see. Pretty much it boils down to this -
For every production run of 100 pcs in the maku collection using Reclaimed wood, Maku preserves 14.72 acres of plantation grown trees absorbing over 36,800 lbs of CO2 and toxins from the air! pretty cool eh!?!

These Beams were taken from a building that was torn down in favor of more modern construction materials.


This is the wood after it has gone through first processing and has been cut down into workable pieces to build Maku furniture.

Maku debut's on MTV's "The Real World"

Check it out, The new Season of MTV's "The Real World" debuted tonight. Filmed in Hollywood, the 20th Season of The Real World is focused on eco living and sustainability. And of course what other furniture company than Maku Furniture would be involved!

Tonights episode had lots of really good shots of the Maku Sectional, Maku Bench, Maku Chaise, and Maku Lounge Chair. The set and design crew @ MTV did a great job in placing all the Maku pieces throughout The Real World set.

Some people might question why Maku would be involved in a show that focus's on young 20 somethings "finding" their way through life with strangers in front of a camera but this is exactly the kind of non traditional approach to the world of home furnishing that we like.
